Breakfast at Ottolenghi
A Taste of Mediterranean Magic at Ottolenghi in Hampstead for My 50th Birthday
Turning 50 is a milestone that deserves a celebration filled with love, laughter, and, of course, incredible food. So, when my girlfriends whisked me away to London this past weekend for an unforgettable birthday celebration, I knew it would be something special. Coming from Boston, I met up with my lifelong friends who had traveled from India, California and Texas all converging in this historic city. Amid our sightseeing and celebratory adventures, one of the weekend’s highlights was our visit to Ottolenghi deli in Hampstead near Belsize Park—a perfect spot for a group of women who appreciate fine Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and cozy, artful spaces.

Holiday Charm and Warmth in Ottolenghi’s Hampstead Deli

Walking up to Ottolenghi’s deli, we were greeted by a vibrant red awning and seasonal holiday decor that made the place feel like a winter wonderland with a Mediterranean twist. The windows were dressed in wreaths, and inside, the atmosphere was bustling yet warm and intimate. The deli was elegantly adorned with holiday touches, including tables and shelves brimming with seasonal treats and pastries wrapped in festive packaging, ready for holiday gifting. Colorful tins, cookie boxes, and holiday-themed confections were beautifully displayed, adding a special warmth and cheer to the space.

The combination of holiday decor and Ottolenghi’s signature rustic style made the deli feel like a cozy escape from the autumn chill, creating the perfect setting to kick off our girls’ weekend together. There was a feeling of joy and anticipation in the air—a wonderful backdrop for a birthday toast among friends.
A Feast for the Senses (and the Soul)
Our group didn’t hold back when it came to indulging. From savory Shakshuka bubbling in a cast-iron skillet to creamy labneh topped with rich, flavorful herbs and fried turmeric eggs, every dish was a work of art in signature Ottolenghi style. Our friendly server shared that each Ottolenghi deli curates its menu with unique dishes tailored to the tastes and preferences of the local community. The vibrant colors and fresh herbs, combined with the earthy tones of grilled bread and seasoned sauces, were almost too beautiful to eat—almost! I was also very happy that they served gluten-free bread. We savored every bite, sharing stories and laughter over plates brimming with Mediterranean goodness in the heart of London on a chilly November day.

Holiday Treats and Temptations
In addition to our savory feast, the deli’s holiday pastries and sweets tempted us from every corner. Festive meringues, cinnamon-dusted pastries, variety of pretzels and intricately decorated holiday cookies were just a few of the delights on display. The shelves were stocked with Ottolenghi’s signature jars, boxes, recipe books (and the hard-to-miss artful tea towels inspired by Mediterranean motifs) —perfect for bringing a taste and flair of his kitchen home for the holidays. Each holiday item was so beautifully presented that it felt like a gift in itself.

Beyond the Food: Celebrating Friendship and Life
There’s something magical about sharing a meal with friends who have been by your side through decades of memories. At Ottolenghi’s, we weren’t just eating; we were celebrating our friendship, reminiscing about old times, and embracing the joy of reaching a new life chapter. My friends had thoughtfully chosen this spot for its cozy ambiance and its reputation for serving food with heart, making it the perfect place to kick off the quiet celebration weekend. When a slice of pistachio and rosewater cake arrived with a candle on top, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude and happiness.

A Perfect Addition to a London Itinerary
If you’re planning a trip to London and want to add a touch of Mediterranean flair and holiday magic to your itinerary, I can’t recommend Ottolenghi’s Hampstead deli enough. It’s ideal for a casual brunch with friends, a solo indulgence, or, in my case, a celebration of life’s sweetest moments. Whether you’re an Ottolenghi devotee, a fan of Mediterranean cuisine, or simply someone who loves to explore beautiful eateries, this spot has something special for you. And don’t forget to bring home some of their seasonal sweets and signature condiments—they’re the perfect way to keep a piece of Ottolenghi with you long after your visit. It made me realize how perfectly an Ottolenghi deli or restaurant would fit into Boston’s fine dining scene. Here’s hoping it happens someday soon!
As I left the deli that day, surrounded by my friends and carrying a bag filled with holiday treats and Mediterranean goodies, I felt a profound sense of joy. Celebrating in London with these amazing women, enjoying some of the best food in the city amid festive decorations—it was truly a birthday I’ll never forget.
